HOME EMERGENCY PLAN

Have an emergency plan and meet with your family members ensuring all members know and understand the emergency plan, review it will all family members every 6 months. You will need to:

• Choose an out-of-town contact

• Decide where to meet

• Make a family communication plan

• Know the escape routes and safe places

• Have a plan for anyone with a disability or special needs (include sensory alarms rather than the standard alarms)

• Have a plan for your pets

• Consider different types of hazards and make sure your plan is adaptable to all

• Know how and when to turn off water, gas, and electricity

• Keep fire extinguishers checked periodically and ensure all family members know how to use them

• Periodically check smoke alarms installed on each level of your home (check monthly, change batteries every 6 months, replace alarms every 10 years)

• Have easy access to your insurance documents, vital records and documents (birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, passports, wills, deeds, and financial insurance, and immunication records should be kept in a safe deposit bocx or other safe location)

• Keep a record of your possessions to help with claim reimbursements in case of loss or damage    

• Know how and when to turn off water, gas, and electricity
